When a leading supplier of fresh quality produce from Ireland they asked if we could create a number of designs for spaces within its new build commercial offices, of course – our answer was yes.
As part of the brief, realistic 3D Studio Max visuals were required to bring a Commercial Interior concept to life, as well as specifying furniture and fixings and creating looks and layouts that were on brand, functional, and appropriate to the many areas that the client needed.
The Brief
When we got the call from our friends in Ireland, we were excited by this almost blank canvas-like project, that needed a full office design, as well as other areas utilised by a busy workforce.
We were asked to provide two things realistic and accurate 3D visuals that brought to life:
· Office desk areas
· Breakout pods
· Boardrooms, meeting rooms and individual offices
· Bathrooms
· Tea points and welfare areas
· The main reception
· A changing area with lockers for people working in the factory area to clean and freshen up and change.
Fixtures and fittings needed to be identified, and materials needed to be specified.
We were a good fit for what they wanted, and we were pleased to be on board.
The Solution
After meeting the client and getting a good idea of what their concept was like, we got back to the office and threw down some ideas on paper.
They were going for a clean and modern-looking re-fit, simple and spacious, but complementary to their brand.
As well as the look and feel they wanted, we had to incorporate functionality, employee flow, workspace and regulatory needs regarding layout design.
The good news is that we’ve been creating these kinds of visuals for a number of years, and specifying materials is part of our design-thinking – a working process that we prefer to use. Working green is one of our priorities, as is creating a look that makes people look twice.
We’d received the plans, and familiarised ourselves with the space we had to work with. We identified the space’s limitations, received the colour palette to work with, and we jumped on to 3D Studio Max, AutoCAD, and Photoshop to produce a few detailed and accurate visualisations.
We created a range of styles that we thought would fit with our client, and added various options for softer furnishings and biophilia.
We had a few conversations with their project manager over our initial drawings. Some designs went beyond their expectations, and some of them needed a few adjustments. But that collaboration meant that we could go away, and really bring some final visuals to life.
As part of the design process, we specified colours that were on brand, and materials that would fit the budget, but be robust enough to do the job, Aesthetics, form and function all played a key part in what we needed to achieve.
We had various dialogue with our client - replacing limited booth seating down one wall to let in more light and give flexibility to the seating arrangement was just one change we made.
By the time we’d got to visual three, the client was suitably wowed by the work we’d done. Across two floors, we worked with our client to create an office that they and us were very happy with, and they signed off our drawings, pass the designs and specifications to their contractor, with the instruction to use them as a working drawing.
The Results
The successful visualisations that Benjamin Spencer Design created exceeded the client's expectations and met their need for a high level of detail. It allowed them to see where they wanted to go with their new office space, and handed them confidence to showcase their wants to their contractors.
There were three main highlights of this job:
1. Working overseas. Visiting clients isn't a problem for us, in fact it usually helps with progressing a project. We venture to Europe and can work further afield.
2. It was Benjamin Spencer Design's first commercial office project, trusted by a client to interpret their brief, and bring the job through to their liking.
3. The final visuals were completed in a timely manner. We maintained great comms and had open and regular conversation to hit timescales.
We’d absolutely nailed the look, and the materials we’d suggested went down very well. On screen, on paper and, eventually, in person.
Despite challenges in multiple design iterations, effective collaboration with the clients project team ensured that obstacles were overcome, leading to a successful outcome for Benjamin Spencer Design.
